Scoop From Sam

As we begin a new year, I wanted to take a moment to let you know about some exciting plans for Circle Ten Council in 2019. Our membership continues to grow. We achieved a tenth straight year of membership growth, with almost a 4% increase in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing and Exploring. We recruited 12, 288 new Cub Scouts, including 2,900 girls – which leads the nation!

Membership growth leads to more Scouts utilizing our camp facilities. The quality of our camp facilities continues to be a key focus. While we are able to secure funding (through grants and capital donations) for new buildings, we also use funding from Popcorn Sales and Camp Card Sales to provide maintenance to keep the facilities among the best in the country.

Last year we were able to build a new pool at Camp James Ray, which is mainly used for our Cub Scout programs. I am pleased to announce that we have secured a financial gift that will provide up-to-date facilities for summer camp staff and other visitors during weekend visits at that camp. We will be building two lodges, which will include indoor living quarters and leadership planning facilities for adult leaders who work with Scouts at the camp. We will also be upgrading the amphitheater which will be used for chapel services and other community gatherings that we have come to associate with summer camp.

Many of you have heard that the National Council is investigating filing for bankruptcy to reorganize their assets. I want to let you know that our assets are the sole property of the Circle Ten Council, which is its own, registered, 501(c)3. Anything that happens at the national level related to bankruptcy will have no effect on our current or future assets.

The future is bright in the Circle Ten Council.

Scouting works. Scouting matters. Scouting lasts … a lifetime.
